Biography
Jack Alberti graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1971 with
a degree in aerospace engineering. Before long, he replaced his traditional
engineering vocation with woodworking, his former avocation.
Over the next few years Jack worked as a carpenter, building fine homes
and doing extensive renovations. He worked for employers from Cape
Cod to Colorado, trying to find his own niche. One winter,
with construction at a all-time low, he climbed a few rungs towards his
ultimate goal.
Jack answered an ad to work with an organ builder, constructing large tracker
pipe organs. Having no experience, but a keen interest in woodworking
and music, he pursued this opportunity vigorously. Jack worked with
all facets of organ building for the next six years, learning about wood,
leather, metal, and the amount of time and detail required to create beautiful
works of art. Then came the desire to set out on his own, to control
his own worklife.
Shortly after moving to the Connecticut shoreline, Jack established his
first business doing specialized woodworking for architects, builders,
and designers, and continued it over the next six years in three different
locations in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Although he was able to construct
very fine work, the designs were not his own. The inevitable next
step was to design and build his own creations.
In 1988, Jack began making speculative pieces of furniture and brought
them to craft shows in Baltimore and New York City. These shows,
sponsored by the American Craft Council, opened doors to other craft artisans,
and provided valuable marketing opportunities.
Jack created speculative pieces for exhibit, and developed commission
pieces for collectors. Some clients collect his work as art, while others
acquired it for it's function. Most, however, collect his work for
a combination of both these reasons. His highly decorative furniture
has been exhibited nationally in galleries and museums, and can also be
found in private collections. Jack has received many awards
for his work, and he has been featured in numerous publications.
Jack is a self taught furniture artist now living in Hadley, MA. |
